As a five-time gold medal winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Kate Gould’s garden design expertise is undisputed. Kyle Books commissioned us to design her book ‘Urban Garden Design’, which is aimed at gardeners of all experience levels, and explores everything from measuring and designing your garden, to choosing the right materials and plants.
Publishing: Art Direction + Design
We developed a clean and contemporary look and feel to reflect the urban-focused content and showcase Kate’s garden designs, as well as those of the other talented designers featured in the book. Plenty of white space gives the imagery room to breathe, whilst a carefully chosen combination of typefaces provides character and differentiation.
To add pace and variety, we explored a range of techniques such as full-bleed imagery in the introduction and pull-out quotes to punctuate the content and create a browsable feel. We also included feature spreads differentiated through grey backgrounds and san serif typefaces, to achieve an elegant and well-balanced aesthetic.
