Interview with music-loving illustrator, Paulo Buchinho
With a highly personal and easily recognisable style, Paulo Buchinho specialises in vector illustration for editorial, branding, social media, and websites.
Why did you decide to take up your creative trade?
I’ve been drawing since I was a child and started working as an illustrator when I was 17.
How do you get past creative blocks?
I will go for walks or short runs. Never less than an hour. But luckily I rarely have creative blocks.
What is your creative process?
As I essentially do editorial illustration, I start by researching the topic. I make some quick blots and after defining the original idea, I make a sketch and then I do the final part of the illustration, in my case almost entirely vectorial.
Where do you look for inspiration?
Books, Magazines, Comics and Music. Music helps me a lot.
What are you reading or listening to right now?
Le Spirou d’Emile Bravo – Tome 5 – Spirou l’espoir malgré tout – Quatrième partie
What does your typical day involve?
Walking/running in the morning, reading some news, taking a look at newspaper covers and working on my illustration projects.
I also take some time to promote my work, about an hour every two days.
What has been your favourite project to date and why?
One of my favourite projects was this. I had complete freedom to work.
How do you switch off?
I play half an hour of my favourite games online, watch a series on HBO or read a little. But I never completely switch off.
Who inspires you?
The music.
A big thank you to Paulo Buchinho for contributing to our series of creative conversations with industry experts.
